TMO: And we’ve seen this before, where they’ve diverted engineering resources from one [project] to another. They clearly aren’t all about just bulking up on engineers. They’re about having the right people working on this stuff, and shifting their focus.
Mr. Kafasis: Last weekend, at D8, All Things Digital, Steve said something like, “We do the best we can with the resources we have.” On the one hand, it make sense, but on the other hand, Apple’s the second biggest company in the U.S. One of the biggest in the world. You have the money to get the resources.
TMO: That’s right. But I don’t think Apple is interested in managing that way.
Mr. Kafasis: Exactly. It’s all about focusing on iOS right now. Focusing on 10.7 after that. So we’ll see.
The idea that Apple has a philosophy of not hiring more people fascinates me. I am not saying that I believe it is true, but it is an interesting to think that there might be the right amount of people for a certain type of organization. For Apple, they have that number. They focus on one thing at a time. I am once again inspired to think about the team I manage at ETS and how everyone is working on totally different projects. Is it the best way for what we are trying to do? There is often an expectation that ten things need to be happening at once, but does that make sense? Do we get the best results that way?
All this is a way of slapping myself on the forehead and taking stock of the fact that we need to increase the depth of our portfolio, not only its breadth.
