“We do the best we can with the resources we have.”

TMO: And we’ve seen this before, where they’ve diverted engineering resources from one [project] to another. They clearly aren’t all about just bulking up on engineers. They’re about having the right people working on this stuff, and shifting their focus.

Mr. Kafasis: Last weekend, at D8, All Things Digital, Steve said something like, “We do the best we can with the resources we have.” On the one hand, it make sense, but on the other hand, Apple’s the second biggest company in the U.S. One of the biggest in the world. You have the money to get the resources.

TMO: That’s right. But I don’t think Apple is interested in managing that way.

Mr. Kafasis: Exactly. It’s all about focusing on iOS right now. Focusing on 10.7 after that. So we’ll see.

The idea that Apple has a philosophy of not hiring more people fascinates me. I am not saying that I believe it is true, but it is an interesting to think that there might be the right amount of people for a certain type of organization. For Apple, they have that number. They focus on one thing at a time. I am once again inspired to think about the team I manage at ETS and how everyone is working on totally different projects. Is it the best way for what we are trying to do? There is often an expectation that ten things need to be happening at once, but does that make sense? Do we get the best results that way?

All this is a way of slapping myself on the forehead and taking stock of the fact that we need to increase the depth of our portfolio, not only its breadth.

Memeo Connect 2.0 Makes GDrive A Reality

Memeo’s GDrive lets you drag and drop entire folders into your Google Docs account, much as you would with a service like Dropbox. You can also save directly to this cloud-attached drive from an application’s ‘Save As’ command. If you open the drive, you can double click on files to open them with your desktop’s native software, then save the changes back to the cloud (again, as you would with services like Dropbox). The app is available for both Mac and Windows.

Along with the GDrive feature, the new version of Memeo Connect features a more robust search engine that lets you search both file names and the content of the files you’re storing in Google Docs (this content search works both for Google Docs files and ‘native’ files that were saved with a program like Microsoft Word). It also offers the ability to browse through your files using more advanced filters than the online version of Google Docs offers.

So, all the schools using using google apps now have an opportunity to offer their students a dropbox-like functionality? Google apps is getting better all the time. The speed at which this happens is mind blowing.

YouTube Launches Web-Based Video Editor

Media_httptctechcrunc_tflfe

Can’t wait to play with it. We have been using and exploring kaltura as a cloud-based video authoring solution. Youtube’s editor seems much more barebones, and may be divorced from the idea of collaborative video editing, which is one of great opportunities that cloud based video editing provides. Kaltura gets this. Still, this YouTube feature is going to give a lot of people a new power.

“Reeder” is the one of most visually pleasing apps in the app store

Photo

My new google reader client of choice. Allow your eyes to feel joy. I
say this with some mixed feelings, though, because it does eschew some
of the OS’s visual conventions (hit the little share link in the app
for a good example). Sometimes rules need to be broken. Just wanted to
share because I am so impressed.
